Lighting
The use of garden lighting is rapidly changing from being purely
functional (e.g. the illumination of paths and driveways, and for
security) to the aesthetic, allowing people to enjoy attractive
and interesting views of their gardens during the hours of darkness.
Lighting
also increases the number of hours that can be spent outside (entertaining
guests perhaps) and enables the highlighting of particularly attractive
features and plants (and hiding the less attractive!).

Lighting
schemes are planned using computer-based CAD technology, and installed
by teams trained in electrical as well as mechanical engineering.
Particular emphasis is placed on long term serviceability and
safety. H2O's lighting division has a wide experience of the relative
merits of different lighting system components. Typical elements
to be considered include:
- Low or mains voltage system
- Types of bulb: tungsten, halogen, sodium, and fluorescent lamps, each with their own characteristics and colour temperatures
- Types of light: bollards, spreadlights, spotlights, floodlights, bulkhead and steplights, coach lamps, stringlights, fibreoptic lighting, etc.
- Solar lighting
At
the design stage, H2O's experts will also advise on the most appropriate
techniques to use to meet the customer's desired effects:
- Downlighting and uplighting
- Grazing and washing
- Crosslighting
- Accent and spotlighting
- Mirroring and silhouetting
- Floodlighting, shadowing, and moonlighting
Achieving
the best results, even with a modest scheme, requires considerable
experience and know-how. H2O's lighting division has the skills
and resources to ensure professional results.
